Lead in drinking water: public health, mitigation and economic perspectives

Lead pipes and plumbing components such as lead-solder and brass fittings can contaminate drinking water on its route from the water mains to the premises and pose a public health risk. Exposure to lead in tap water is entirely preventable but challenging to achieve. To contribute to a better understanding of these challenges, this report reviews evidence on the public health, mitigation and economic perspectives of lead in drinking water in Scotland and internationally.

Scotland’s contribution to international water policy and research (Report)

On World Water Day in 2018, we held a workshop exploring Scotland’s contribution to international water policy development and research needs. This workshop brought together Scottish academics, practitioners and policy makers to share experiences in promoting the UN Sustainable Development Goal: “ensure availability and sustainable management of water and sanitation for all” (SDG 6).

Investigation of the relationship between humic substances and total phosphorus and the processes of release from catchment soils to loch waters

This study outlines proposals to clarify the importance of water colour (in terms of dissolved organic matter - DOM - compositional quality, e.g. humic substances (HS) content) for predicting TP concentrations in Scottish Lochs to help meet regulatory criteria under the Water Framework Directive. 

World Water Day - 22 March

Every year World Water Day is celebrated on 22nd March. This year the theme is 'Nature for Water' with events being held worldwide. The theme is encouraging nature-based solutions to the problems that we currently face, like floods, droughts, and pollution. Check out more at the World Water Day website.

SULSA AMR Conference, 26-27 April 2018, Glasgow

The SULSA Antimicrobial Resistance Conference will be held at the University of Strathclyde 26-27 April 2018. By bringing together individuals across the spectrum of research, health, industry, and policy, the conference aims to inform and coordinate AMR activities in Scotland, including a seed-funding call for registered attendees.
